Patagonia Chile House and Cabin on Rivers

Where this property is located:

Located 20 kilometers outside of Futaleufu, Chile on the Caratera Austral in the area known as Sector Azul. This is in Region X (ten) of Chile. Patagonia. Sweeping vistas of the Andes Mountains, blue glaciers, racing rivers, deep glacial lakes, waterfalls. You are as likely to see farmers transporting hay on carts with oxen as a 4WD vehicle topped with kayaks and rafting equipment. Vast swaths of lands are set aside for conservation as private preserves (open to the public) and national parks including Pumilin Park, tens of thousands of hectares purchased by Doug Tompkins and deeded back to Chile.

The two-story, two bedroom, one and a half bath house is situated on almost two hectares bordered by two white-water rivers. The rivers, Rio Azul, famous for white water rafting and kayaking, and the Rio Desague are both glacial fed. Both rivers provide excellent salmon and trout fishing. The entire property is forested in old growth trees with a view of Tres Monjas, a magnificent mountain with needle-like spires.

The house, built in 2008, has a full deck facing the confluence of the river and views of snow-capped peaks of the Andes. One large bedroom, one small bedroom and a full bathroom upstairs, downstairs is an open livingroom with vaulted ceiling, all open to a kitchen/dining room area and a half bath. The furniture is hand-crafted by local artisans from whole logs. Furniture includes a queen-size bed with new mattress, twin bed with new mattress, couch, two side chairs, large coffee table, and a small breakfast table. Most interesting is a whole-log hutch made by a local. It is a five-foot tall hollow tree with a door cut and hinged into it, used for storage. Hot water is from an on-demand propane hot water heater.

A small unfinished cabin is situated down from the house overlooking the Rio Desaugue (with it's year-round cascades and salmon in March/April). The cabin is not wired for electric. There are two fire pits, one by the house, and one by the cabin.

A micro-hydro (currently dismantled for storage) powers the house. A small generator is also sufficient to power appliances (not included) and lights.

The town of Futaleufu (pop. 2000) is the capital of the Provencia de Palena, Region X. It is ten kilometers from the international border crossing with Argentina. Futa is a stunning small town with neatly kept lawns, prolific roses lining every street. There are several small family-owned stores with groceries and provisions, two hardware stores, a couple of mechanics, a small but excellent hospital staffed with four doctors and several small restaurants.

About the community:

Futa comes alive with international travelers starting in October/November, culminating with major river-rafting festivals in February and March. It is a hub for adventure tourism, including kayaking, horseback riding, parasailing, hiking, mountain climbing, fly fishing and world-class whitewater rafting. Rodeos, asados and parades all take place during verano. Most importantly, the town celebrates it's founding during this time with a town fiesta beginning with a parade, and a town picnic on the banks of the Rio Espolon. Local farmers provide beef, lamb, and pork which is roasted on spits. Local ladies boil huge pots of potatoes and bake bread. All you need to bring is a salad, plates, utensils and drink. The elders of the town are honored and the music starts. Young and old dance the Cueca together and everyone breaks out singing the town song, Vals de Futaleufu.
